Our Community

 

Our founder Kurt Hahn considered “the foremost task of education” to be the development in young people of “an enterprising curiosity, an undefeatable spirit, tenacity in pursuit, readiness for sensible self-denial, and above all, compassion.”

To this day, compassion and service to others remain core to our ethos. Both staff and students engage in a wide range of charitable projects, locally and internationally, to support those in need.

It is not just what we teach in the classroom, it is the values we live by every day.

Thailand Water Project

For over thirty years, Gordonstoun has sent a team of students to Thailand to work with the Karen Hills' Tribe organisation, laying pipe lines and building water tanks to provide fresh water and fresh water storage to remote villages across the region.

Open Gardens

Each summer Gordonstoun opens its grounds to the public for the annual Open Gardens, helping to raise valuable funds for over 200 charities.

Community Service

At Gordonstoun we ask students to commit their time and energy not just to the school community, but local and global communities too. To assist those in need, students volunteer to take part in rescue services, collaborate with local charities and actively serve the local community.

The Gordonstoun Highland Games

The Gordonstoun Highland Games has been an annual tradition for over 30 years. One of our biggest fundraising events for local charities – and a perfect family day out - its aim is to provide a sporting challenge for Primary School school children in our area.

Romania

Working with the staff of Little John's House in Romania, a team of Year 12 volunteers help run the respite and day care centre, a Summer School which provides respite care for adults and children with special needs, giving them a change of scenery and a chance for engagement and fun.

India

Our international service project to India gives students the chance to work with young people in schools and villages, providing classroom support whilst also learning about animal husbandry, working with rescued or abandoned elephants.

Swona, Orkney

Nearer to home, volunteers travel to the island of Swona, in the Orkneys, working on behalf of the Islands' community repairing dry stone walls, pathways and bothies. Students work alongside staff to improve and develop facilities, so that visitors and locals alike can enjoy the remarkable flora, fauna and birdlife of the tiny island.

The Gordonstoun Highland Games

With over £100,000 raised for local charities to date, the Gordonstoun Highland Games is a day of thrilling events, fantastic entertainment and fun for all ages! Enjoy traditional contests like Tossing the Caber, Hurling the Haggis and Tug o’ War, alongside races, an obstacle course, Highland dancing and more. Soak up the sounds of pipe bands, browse unique stalls and indulge in delicious food and drink. Everyone is welcome, with Free Entry & Free Parking.
